Jonathan’s visit: Angry youths attack PDP office

There was tension in Jalingo, Taraba State capital yesterday as angry youths protested the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the state. The youths attacked the secretariat of the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), vandalising several vehicles and other valuables.

The youths numbering over 100 and armed with stones, sticks and other dangerous weapons chanting “no to Jonathan, no to Jonathan”, trooped to the PDP secretariat soon after president Jonathan arrived Jalingo on a campaign visit.

An eye witness told Daily Sun that the youths gained entry to the  PDP secretariat, vandalised about 10 vehicles.

The youths were however, chased away few hours later by a detachment of armed mobile policemen drafted from the Taraba State police command. The attack was suspected to have been carried out by youths loyal to a rival political party.

, may not be unconnected to the activities of another rival youths suspected to be supporters of PDP, who hours before Jonathan’s arrival, went round the state capital to destroy billboards and posters of other political parties’ candidates vying for various elective positions in the state.

Daily sun gathered that while the security were containing the attack on the PDP secretariat in Jalingo, there were reports of attack on PDP vehicles in Tella village and Sabongida in Gassol local government area when PDP supporters from neighboring local government areas were passing by to Jalingo to attend the PDP rally.

Sources told The Sun that in sabongida and Tella villages, over ten vehicles conveying PDP supporters were attacked by angry youths of the two villages. According to sources, the situation was however brought under control with the quick intervention of Soldiers and policemen manning road blocks in the areas.

When contacted, the state police public relations officer, PPRO, ASP Joseph Kwaji, Confirmed the attack on the PDP secretariat, adding that before the policemen arrived at the scene, the perpetrators has already fled.

According to the PPRO, ten vehicles belonging to the staffs and officials of the party were vandalized, while aluminum windows of the secretariat building were also destroyed, saying that no arrest was made and no injury recorded.
