ABIA STATE GOVERNMENT DESCRIBE PENSIONERS AS DISGRUNTLED ELEMENTS
After the Pensioneers protest yesterday at Bende Road by Subtreasury, Abia State government online media handle “Abia Online” has come out to describe the pensioneers involved in the protest as Disgruntled Elements.

The pensioners protest yesterday was triggered by the non-payment of the monthly allowance for 12 months and others for non-payment of gratuity.
Based on the report of Abia Online, “the leadership of Abia State pensioners disassociated themselves from the protest”, but the unilateral action of this pensioners who protested could be linked to the alleged nonchalant attitude of the leadership.

ABIA STATE COUNCIL OF NATIONAL UNION OF PENSIONERS (NUP) DISSOCIATES SELF FROM THEL PUBLIC SHOW OF SHAME ORGANIZED BY ONE ELDER DANIEL AMAUGO: DESCRIBES THEIR ACTIONS AS ANTI-UNION PROTEST.

#AbiaOnline
It has come to the notice of Abia State Government that some disgruntled elements gathered a handful of some old citizens claiming to be pensioners of Abia State and stage managed a protest along Bende road in Umuahia yesterday afternoon with the intention of embarrassing the State government as being insensitive to their plights.

For clarity, the leadership of Abia State pensioners led by Comr. C.N. Udensi have disassociated  themselves from this disgruntled  group from Umuahia sub treasury.  The state chairman, Comr. C. N. Udensi and his deputy Eld. Dr. O. C. Arungwa who were in Anambra at the time of this report for the burial of the late wife of the Anambra State Chapter Chairman of the Union, denied this group led by one elder Daniel Amaugo from Umuahia sub treasury.

He described it as  embarrassing and anti-union, the actions of this group who went on the street for whatever reasons not known to the entire union.

The chairman maintained that if there must be a decision by the body, it has to be a
unanimous.  He wondered what gave the said man the impetus to take these men to the street without reference to the main body. The chairman maintained that they have been in contact with the governor with recourse to the issues bordering  on the welfare of the pensioners and has been assured by the governor that the gap in payment between salaries of workers and pensions will be bridged in the next three months. He assured that the State council of the union has confidence in the Governor.

In a separate telephone interview, another executive of the union who does not want his name in print divulged that the union is made up of twenty two (22) branches in the State and wondered why one branch will jump into voyage without due consultation.

He stated that until now, there is no known cause of this protest to the union as they had already started scampering away before some of the executives sent to ascertain the cause of their actions arrived the scene where they had gathered. The executive described Eld. Amaugo as a recalcitrant man who has engaged in contumacious behaviour which led to his suspension for a period of six months.

In his words, he said that elder Amaugo was just recalled from suspension and may not have any oita of idea of the progress made so far, hence he embarked on such demeaning mission. According to the interviewee, “pensioners are currently heaving an euphoric sigh of great relief  except for reduction in allocation which has affected every segment of the public sector”.

Put differently, the commissioner for finance in Abia State, Mr. Obinna Oriaku explained that on “assumption of office, governor directed that biometric capture of all pensions and online payment be adopted for payment instead of the cash system that encouraged  fraud. Today, all pensioners receive alerts once they are paid not minding distance and location as they no longer line up under mango tress to collect their stipends in these sub treasuries.  This process has continued till last week when all pensioners both at state and local government level were paid.

Granted there are few months outstanding which is not peculiar to Abia, local government pensioners were paid last week for the months of July while the State pensioners has been updated to May.

I wonder where the ten (10) months outstanding is coming from” Mr Oriaku queried.
